Bathroom Hacks & Myths

We all heard our parents say that swallowed gum stays in your stomach for seven years or that you should wait an hour after eating before swimming. But here are some bathroom plumbing myths you can forget, along with some helpful bathroom cleaning hacks to follow.

Bathroom Plumbing Myths

Toilet Water Drains a Different Way Depending on Where You Are in the World

False. The direction toilet water exits the bowl is determined by the jets’ spray, not whether you’re in the northern or southern hemisphere.
This myth comes from the Coriolis effect, which explains how Earth’s rotation influences moving objects.

However, the effect is too weak to impact the small amount of water in a toilet. So, no, Australians don’t see their toilet water spin the opposite way!

You Could Find a Snake in Your Toilet

True. Although it’s very rare, there have been reports of snakes finding their way into toilets.
These critters often seek dark hiding spots or food sources. Snakes can enter homes through broken sewer pipes, but the likelihood of finding a snake in your toilet is extremely low.

Flushable Wipes Are Safe for Your Plumbing

False. While pre-moistened wipes are common for baby wipes, cleaning wipes, and adult bathroom wipes, their packaging often claims they are flushable.

However, plumbing experts warn that these wipes can cause significant backups in your sewage system. It’s best to dispose of them in the trash instead of flushing them down the toilet.

Bathroom Cleaning Hacks

Rinse Your Dirty Toilet Brush

How many of us clean the toilet with a brush and then just put it right back in the holder? Yuck!

Instead, rinse the brush with clean water before putting it back. Close the toilet seat and lid over the handle so it can drip dry in the bowl.

You can also add a mixture of white vinegar and water to the brush holder to keep the brush fresh for next time!

Clean the Shower That Cleans You

Next time you’re in the shower, take a look at the showerhead—it might not be as clean as you think!

To clean it, heat some white vinegar and a few tablespoons of dish soap in the microwave. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray it directly on the showerhead to remove the grime.

Use Dryer Sheets for More Than Laundry

Dryer sheets can do more than just soften your laundry when you add a few drops of water.

You can use them to wipe away soap scum in your shower or tub, or to bring back the shine to your chrome fixtures.
